Stories rich with heritage
Bird motifs in Greek embroidery can be found in traditional costumes as well as, in other arts and crafts, such as architecture, ceramics, and jewelry-making, and in household objects of everyday use.
They symbolize good luck and good news, or the aversion of bad luck and their meaning is easily identified by all members of the community. They may also represent the spirit world. They are messengers from heaven, the sky and the sun gods.
The partridge (perdika) is seen as a symbol of wellbeing and good health and can also represent the innocence of the new bride. The parrot carries messages between separated lovers. The peacock symbolizes the resurrection in early Christian times and is also considered a Byzantine motif used to fend off bad luck.
Historically speaking, the long and turbulent history of Greece has left a visible legacy in its embroidery designs which have been influenced by Venetian, Genoese and Frankish rule.
